Centurion [Blu-ray]

Muscular battles in the bitter North.
This is a story set in the time of Roman Britain. It begins with the `myth' of the 9th Legion, which might have been destroyed in battle with the wild Picts of Scotland. The bulk of the story though is concerned with the flight of a small group of survivors and the merciless pursuit of their fierce and vengeful enemies.

Frankly I struggle to understand the low profile of this film and the lukewarm reports. In my opinion it is a perfectly reasonable movie with some exceptional aspects. These include the stunning scenery which really conveys the bracing cold and desolation but also beauty of the far-North. It looks like an ancient land, all rugged and wild and is almost worth the price of admission alone. The Picts are hard as glacial ice, tough and violent and look very impressive too.

With the story itself I had a few quibbles but it was serviceable. The action scenes were generally good, even tense in places but I was annoyed with some battle scenes which...

Technically Impressive Epic That Sometimes Fails The Logic Test
When I first discovered director Neil Marshall, I was an instant fan. In the horror genre, he did some solid work with the satisfying werewolf tale "Dog Soldiers" and the sublimely staged "The Descent" (which I know has its detractors, but for me was one of the most entertaining films of its year). The "Mad Max" retread "Doomsday" was an inevitable disappointment--but didn't dispel the notion that, at least, Marshall had a visual flair. I was intrigued to see him wander into "Gladiator" type territory with "Centurion" because the man can stage one heck of a battle. While the film, which is certainly better than "Doomsday," has a lot going for it--sadly, it ends up missing the mark. My guy reaction as I turned to my friend at the end was "Man, I wanted to like that much more than I did!"

I was genuinely and actively rooting for "Centurion" to be more wholly satisfying--so I guess that's a positive comment in and of itself. First off, the film looks absolutely...

wonderfully gritty realism in historical fiction, however unhistoric
This is an absolutely excellent historical fiction film, granted with extreme license. OK, I am a Roman history pedant and aficionado of historical novels, so I brought to this a critical eye, but also a hope that I would get enveloped in the narrative, in subtle character, in wonder at the endless varieties of human ambition. At this, it was so successful that I forgot the present with complete delight, even after 2 full viewings.

In terms of history, this is fiction based on speculation about what happened to the 9th Legion, which disappeared from the historical record without a trace - the only way to limn what happened to them is to piece together ambiguous clues, such as the inscriptions on grave stones scattered throughout the former empire. The time is that of the Emperor Hadrian, the golden age of the Roman Empire - the series of good, circumspect emperors who governed judiciously and without the insane excess that is remembered with Nero or Commodus. Rome is...

The Goonies (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Goonies R Still Good Enough
Director Richard Donner has gone into his wine cellar, retrieved this vintage flick, and poured it out for today's kids who might enjoy it along with a serving of Spy Kids and Harry Potter. Now, what is a goony, they might ask? Well, in this case, it's one of seven kids who find themselves searching for buried pirate loot, and running from the villainous Fratelli family. It's Saturday-matinee serial redux; SEE the Goonies escape from Steven Spielberg death-traps and Rube Goldberg booby traps! LAUGH at the unforgettable 'Truffle Shuffle!' APPLAUD as our heroes save the day, and WISH they'd made a sequel.Donner's wine has improved with age. The rapid pacing, the unraveling mystery, the over-lapping dialogue...and the incomparable Anne Ramsey as Mama Fratelli. Ahhhh, what a great actress. She scared the lice off of me as a kid, and can still do it, sixteen years later. And Sloth, cousin to the Incredible Hulk. How much can one love a misunderstood movie mutant? And Jeff Cohen as Chunk,...

The Goonies R Good Enough For Me.
Every once in a while that one movie that a whole generation of kids knows and loves comes around. For my generation, it was The Goonies. My friends and I used to pretend we were characters from the movie for months after we saw it. Goonies features one of the most endearing monsters ever, in the Baby Ruth loving Sloth, a young hero, Mikey, who uses his words incorrectly, an asian James Bond wannabe, Corey Feldman as the obnoxious Mouth, and the obligatory fat kid who everyone makes fun off. This group of kids, and Mikey's older brother and his girlfriends go off on an underground treasure hunt in an effort to save their beloved homes which are about to be torn down to make room for a country club. All the while their being pursued by The Fratellis, a family of counterfeiters who are after the same treasure. Awesome in everyway, despite it's script flaws (Data mentions the infamous non-existing octopus scene deleted from the film because it was deemed unnecessary)...

Nothing Will Never Surpass The Goonies!
Like many before me, I grew up with The Goonies. I ran around my house as a young one, trying to act like Mouth, or doing the Truffle Shuffle to entertain friends (I lacked on the truffle, but I could do the shuffle).

The Goonies holds something that every kid should find magical, even though the only magic in the movie is the magic of friendship. Steven Spielberg wrote the story about a group of friends who are about to lose their houses so a country club can be built where they leave. They come upon a treasure map that supposedly has a legend behind it, and leads to a great treasure. Mikey and his colorful bunch of friends set up to go in search of the treasure not knowing the villianist trio, the Fratellis, are also out for the treasure. Along the way, chaos ensues, friendships go stronger, and they meet a creature who has nothing but love to share and Baby Ruths to eat.

The characters are all likable . . . are all lovable, and the actors who portray them made them all that...

Johnny Mnemonic

Dated yes, but a fun ride in blu-ray!
Yes, you have to suspend your disbelief in certain areas, the plot for example. Yes, doubling 80 gigs to 160 gigs is laughable with the mega gigs available today (the movie was made over 15 years ago). Yes, Keanu Reeves acting is wooden (when is it not?) However, it is still a kick ass movie that is even better in blu-ray. Just think of it as a comic book type movie and just enjoy the ride. One thing is sure, it has never looked better.

What's the problem?
It has to be said that when they open the annals of the worlds most underrated movies this will be at the top of the list. Keanu is well cast as JMn - some would say bereft of personality but I think that's missing the point, he's cool and professional, just as he should be. Ice-T plays the beleagured yet passionate freedom fighter with gusto and Dolph Lundengrundenhousen...en...whatever...is excellent as a twisted cyborg with a religious fixation. Everyone else is more than adequate in their roles. The plot is more subtle than the instant, intense visuals let on (and this is where a lot of people seem to trip up as they do not see past the cheese) and the movie stands up well to multiple viewings which is what you want from a video. All in all, a great package for any sci-fi fan and a must for Gibsonette's. Buy.

Johnny Mnemonic: Superbit Collection
Been looking for this movie in a widescreen format for ages. The movie was definitely prophetic and thought-provoking. My brother does research on radiation - radio waves, microwaves, cell phones, etc - and we are literally awash in a sea of this stuff. There are numerous health issues, which this movie in an entertaining way addresses.
I enjoyed the characters. Great casting!

Waldbuhne 2010: An Evening With Renee Fleming [Blu-ray]

Nothing new as far as what she sings; but she is in fine form
I think I have heard Renee sing all of these pieces elsewhere, but I can't recall her sounding better anywhere. I apologize but I can't speak to the orchestral numbers as I enjoyed them, but am not well versed enough to compare to other versions. With Fleming, though, I can say that I can get frustrated with her programs at times. I didn't know what to expect here, especially seeing that there was "nothing new." However, the Korngold (possibly not just her best rendition, but my new favorite all time) and Strauss are beyond any previous recordings I've heard or live versions I've heard myself. A pleasant surprise. even with the orchestral filler (sorry, I like many bought for Renee and was weary that the orchestra numbers might dominate the disk - but, I found them nice accents to what is definitely a Fleming centered concert with a fantastic orchestra). Fleming fans will love. I don't consider myself a die hard Fleming fan after hearing her sing some pretty lazy concerts over the...

Ann's opinion
I am an unabashedly enthusiastic admirer of Renee Fleming's work but was very disappointed in this DVD. The sound seemed tailored to the orchestra - and what an orchestra at that! I've not heard a better rendition of Tchaikovsy's Romeo and Juliet in 50 years of concert going. However, Renee's singing came across as kind of 'muted'. I'd heard all the selections before of course but she sounded, and at times looked, quite apprehensive; although ravishing as usual in some gorgeous dresses. As other reviewers have suggested it may have been a technical problem and the fault of sound engineers. All in all, a very frustrating and disappointing concert. Not that it would stop me buying any other of hers!

Waffling Waldbuhne
I have several Waldbuhne recordings and they have all been quite enjoyable. This particular recording is not up to the standards of the others. The issue is not so much, as one reviewer stated that it is compressed, as all audio is compressed to some degree or another. (If it were not, you would have some very unbalanced over-modulated recordings!)

That being said, there is a limited frequency response here which makes the music sound a bit muted. There are no real deep lows or transparent highs. The DTS 5.1 master audio surround lacks depth and ambiance. For the best Waldbuhne concert from an audio respective get "Berlin Concert: Live From Waldbuhne [Blu-ray] (2008)". It is quite impressive!

Despite some of the audio challenges, I did enjoy this concert as it is a decent live recording. I particularly enjoyed Renee Fleming's interpretation of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon". Even though, it is the slowest and most emphatic version I have ever heard, there is amazing...

Annie's Point

Can't Wait
I'm so looking forward to getting this movie. I remember watching it on TV several years ago and loved it. I recorded it from the TV and have watched several times. The quality of my VHS tape isn't very good anymore, so it will be wonderful to watch it like it should be.
Betty White & Richard Thomas are both great actors and are wonderful in this movie about a woman (White) who wants to take her husband's ashes to a place that was very special to both of them and where he has requested his ashes be spread. The only problem, it is across the country and her son (Thomas)feels he is too busy to take the time to take her there and that she shouldn't go alone. So she gets her granddaughter to go with her, without telling her son, and off they go in a funny, sentimental at times, road trip. And, of course, like she thought he would, her son follows them and the whole family is together when they reach that special place, "Annie's Point".

Betty White Rules!
This movie was on Hallmark and I missed part of it repeatedly. Finally I saw the whole movie, and just loved the story and interaction of the characters. Fun movie to take your mind off of the troubles in life. Enjoy.

funny movie
This was so funny , we watch it for family time all my children are teens and we all were laughing. we had to skip one part when they go swimming that is all, otherwise it is fine movie for the family with older children

The Pacific [Blu-ray]

Outstanding! The Pacific is rare film making
****Spoiler Alert*****

This program follows 3 Marine heroes, their comrades and their sacrifice against a fearless enemy. You will feel every emotion as you watch this epic series. There are several scenes that will never leave your mind. This is an accurate depiction of combat in the Pacific theatre. Its very inhumane at times and not always easy to watch. Having said that-its something everyone should see, regardless of your interest in World War 2. The level of detail and battle sequences are amazing. The amphibious landings and the hell thats thrown at these guys is unthinkable. The fact that the Pacific war isn't covered enough, makes this educational for some and intriguing to everyone. Thanks to Clint Eastwoods great movies(Letters From Iwo Jima, Flags Of Our Fathers) and Speilberg/Hanks -The Pacific, we are starting to get some great coverage in this area. Of more importance, the men who gave so much are getting the recognition they deserve.

I have read...

It's not Better!
First let me say that HBO, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks deserve a standing ovation for making this epic piece of history. I just finished watching the last episode. Once I saw the first episode, I was mesmerized for the next 9 weeks! I scheduled everything on Sunday around watching "The Pacific".
Outstanding acting, incredible cinematography, great music score, realism that is scary! I'm running out of superlatives to use! It's not better, than BOB! It's just as good and just as heart warming, and gut wrenching as BOB. Both of these historical mini-series deserve equal credit. Don't let some of the reviews here influence your judgement not to watch it. Yes there are those that feel strongly about one or another, but I don't believe that was anyone's goal in making the Pacific. I believe, especially Tom Hanks, just has this compelling, passionate desire to put both theaters of WWII in the minds of both, those that served and those of us who have not. The mellow drama movies of...

Lack of Cohesion Hampers a Noble Effort
I enjoyed bits and pieces of this mini-series and from my readings of E.B. Sledge and historians of the Pacific battles I thought it accurately portrayed the combat experiences of the Marines in that theater. I found the brief strategic overviews narrarated by Hanks before each episode to be helpful, and I thought the combat scenes and the portrayal of the Marines' misery was well done, but on the whole I found the mini-series unsettling in a number of ways and I don't think I'd watch it again.

Most importantly, I feel the format of the series was disconnected. In attempting to weave together the stories of three Marines who weren't necessarily fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, we get glimpses of each Marine and are then moved on to the next one. The effect this had on me was such that I'd begin to care about one of them but would then be quickly shifted away to the next one. So I found I really didn't care about any of the characters until E.B. Sledge heads off to combat,...

Toy Story 3 (Spanish Edition)

Nostalgia in a big, big way
My review is brief as others have almost said it all. I just want to say that I am 62 years old, and just the thought about the way I felt when I saw this movie in the theatre makes me tear up. It is a nostalgic feeling in a big way. Reminds you of your childhood and those special feelings about growing up. You want to grow up and get on to being an adult in the worst way, but thinking back now your childhood was such a very special time. So fleeting and if we're lucky, such a special time in our lives.
I highly recommend the purchase of this movie to add to your collection.
I honestly feel that the series should stop here. Perfect right where it was left.

A worthy completion of a classic trilogy
I went to the San Francisco Film Festival screening at Pixar Studios last night not really knowing what to expect. Toy Story has been with us for 15 years now (20, in terms of actual development) and I had a sinking feeling that maybe all the character potential had been used in the first two and this was some shameless plot by Disney to exploit the franchise ("Little Mermaid 3", anyone?). Well, shame on me for underestimating the capabilities of Pixar, who once again have shown how a small studio in Emeryville is a storytelling powerhouse that leaves the rest of the industry in the dust.

Toy Story 3 is the tale of Andy, the toys' owner, going to college and their quest to determine their future - headed between the attic or a daycare center. If you've enjoyed the way the first two films blend character drama with innovative action and humor, this cocktail hits its stride in the third film, which draws on everything we already know about the characters and then adds two new...

No owners means no heartbreak
"Toy Story" was about sibling rivalry. "Toy Story 2" was about loving others, even if it means you might get hurt someday.

So what is "Toy Story 3" about? It takes the whole "kids + loyal toys" theme to its natural conclusion, by showing us what happens when the kids grow up and leave. While the first two-thirds of the movie are fairly pedestrian (for a Pixar movie!), the last part is both action-packed and emotionally wrenching.

Ten years have passed, and Andy is now a college-bound teenager. His toys are anxious about what's going to happen, so Woody keeps assuring them that they'll be put safely in the attic. But a misunderstanding leads to a date with the garbage truck. Since the toys believe they have been abandoned, they jump into the box of donated toys bound for Sunnyside Daycare.

They're greeted by the genial Lots-o'-Hugging Bear (aka Lotso) and the friendly daycare toys, and all seems to be well. But Andy's toys soon discover that Sunnyside...

Armed & Dangerous

Great John Candy romp!
Like many of the action comedies of the time this one delivers an entertaining story with John Candy's wacky humor. Candy and Levy star as the protagonists who are forced to join a security agency when all other options fail. Revolving around a plot involving corruption and crooked cops Candy and Levy aim to get to the bottom of all that is wrong while [complicating matters] frequently. I really laughed a lot at this film. Candy and Levy make a great team and offer up some very hysterical scenes. Levy's attempts at being a defense attorney, Candy fishing at a pier, and the two crashing a ball thrown for the chief of police all seem like harmless events but these two always know how to screw them all up. If you are a fan of the SCTV or SNL crews then you definately have to see this movie. It is lesser known but very funny.

FAIRLY FUNNY CANDY VEHICLE
John Candy is Frank Dooley, a cop unjustly fired from his job. Candy decides to become a Security Guard for Guard Dog Security. He is teamed with second-rate former prosecutor Norman Kane.

On the job they find themselves mixed up in a plot with shady, mob-run Union reps led by Robert Loggia as the mob boss. They try to tell their story to a young Meg Ryan, daughter of the security company boss but she doesn't beleive them. Soon they find themselves accused of murder and on the run from the cops and the mobsters.

Levy and Candy, two ex-SCTV alums have a good chemistry together in a kind of modern day laurel and hardy stlye. Not an uproarious movie but some funny parts, the best being when the pair hide out from the cops in a LA sex shop and Candy dresses in drag to escape the cops.

A fun movie. Not a gem but some good bits.

Sometimes Clever Comedy but John Candy`s Classic.
When an Honest Cop (John Candy) was framed for stealing and Ex-Lawyer (Eugene Levy), they become together Private Security Guards but when a Conspiracy that is happining at the Private Security Guards. The Ex-Cop and the Ex-Lawyer are going to solve the case together, if they like it or not.

Directed by Mark L. Lester (Class of 1984 and 1999, Commando) shows a great fun of Comedy and Action. Candy and Levy are great together, the supporting cast are:Robert Loggia, Kenneth McMillian, Meg Ryan, Jonathan Banks, Brion James and Steve Ralisback (In a Cameo). DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer (also in Pan & Scan) with the Original:Dolby Stereo 2.0 Surround Sound. This was a box office disappointment in 1986 but it does way better on Video. John Candy and Brion James died years later after this fun. This is a fun cop comedy. Grade:A-.

Jawbreaker

deliciously creepy
Occasionally some brilliant movie makers slip in without fanfare what should become a classic in a genre critics love to hate. Critics probably didn't even have to watch this to decide to trash it, but if so they missed a real gem! Rose McGowan is a most tauntingly intirguing villain in a role she was born to play. And Rebecca Gayheart really shines as a major supporting character. Too bad she's so entrenched in TV acting and hence movies are mostly robbed of a wonderful talent. Were it not for the Academy's bias against this kind of movie, those two could have been shoo-ins for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Get yourself a video of this, avoid an excessively creepy night, don't eat to much, hold on to your chair and prepare to be thrilled!

Not funny, but way entertaining
This movie rocks!! So entertaining! best quote:

Julie- our best friend is dead! do you have any idea what that means?

Marcie- that your shoe in for prom queen?

Delightfully Bad Flick, and That's a Good Thing!
Most might look at this film and see it as a total bomb, but I see it as sinfully delightful in it's badness! It has a style and attitude all it's own within the overbearing genre aimed at teenage/20-somethings.

Quick Synopsis: The coolest girls in school, ruled by Courtney (the Queen Bee) decide to play a harmless prank on one of their girlfriends, Liz, for her birthday. Sadly, the prank turned tragic when it resulted in Liz's death -- an occurence that was accidentally witnessed by the nerdiest girl in school, Fern Mayo. Now Courtney and company must strike a deal with Fern (they give her a makeover and help her become beautiful and popular...like them) in order to keep her quiet.

This film has a dark comedy quality to it, much like the movie Heathers (THX Version) did. The characters have an odd and quirky manner of speaking, and it makes the dialogue somewhat broken and fascinating at the...

Mrs. Miracle

Looking for that feel-good holiday film on DVD, "Mrs. Miracle" is definitely for you!
In December 2009, the novel to movie adaptation of Debbie Macomber's "Mrs. Miracle" debuted on the Hallmark channel. The original novel has sold over 60 million copies and with the holiday season around the corner, the film "Mrs. Miracle" starring Doris Roberts ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), James Van Der Beek ("Dawson's Creek", "Varsity Blues") and Erin Karpluk ("Being Erica", "Life Unexpected") is set for a release on DVD.

"Mrs. Miracle" revolves around Seth Webster (played by Van Der Beek) and Reba Maxwell (played by Erin Karpluk), two people who are going through their own personal pain in their lives.

Seth is widower with two six-year-old twin boys Jason and Judd and as a pianist, since the death of his wife, not only has he stopped playing the piano, he has kept the existence of his deceased wife away from them. Unwilling to talk about her until they grow older, despite the kids wanting to know more about their mother. So, while Seth focuses on his...

Fun family holiday film with a lesson in forgiveness
As the movie began it was very reminiscent of the opening of the movie "Nanny Express." Nannies are coming and going at a rapid pace, unable to cope with the two rambunctious kids of a widowed man. But in this case the kids are twin six-year-old boys who need a role-model, not a playmate for a father (according to one departing nanny). They are not bratty, spoiled kids who are annoying to watch, they are just kids who have lacked good parenting and need some guidance.

The storyline has been very thoroughly covered in a previous review, so I won't spend time there. "Mrs. Miracle," whose name is really Mrs. Merkle but the twins keep getting it wrong and it sticks, is played delightfully by Doris Roberts. She is not only a magical nanny who achieves "Super Nanny" results without a "naughty chair," but she is pretty effective in the matchmaking department, too. The romance involves two people who have been deeply hurt in their past and have not been able to let go. One needs to...

Mrs Miracle A Winner
Mrs Miracle is a winner in my book. The story is heart-warming, and it truly believable. Miracles do happen at Christmas time, and Debbie Macomber helps them come to life. A great read for the young at heart, no matter the chronological years one may wear! Highly recommended reading.

Against All Odds [Special Edition]

Too Hot to Handle
Expert opinion says that since the advent of color film, a good contemporary noir film is an L.A. noir film; that seems to be largely so, except then you've got "Body Heat," set in Florida. Be that as it may, "Against All Odds" is an LA noir film: it profits from the unique atmosphere of Los Angeles, the sinister corruption behind the sunny smile; the reality of arid desert behind the wastefully-watered green lawn. And most particularly, the parched, penned-up ill-respected Los Angeles River that features in Roman Polansky's mythic "Chinatown, and "in "The Narrows," one of Michael Connelly's recent books. The river also, of course, features in that well-known teenage film noir,"Grease," in which John Travolta and his all-singing, all-dancing fool friends stage their drag race in the river's concreted bed, graced by only the merest trickle of water. The Los Angeles River: Ignored until it rampages.

"Against All Odds" is a loose 1980's remake of Robert Mitchum's film noir,...

Beautiful scenery of Mayan ruins and a good story
Director Taylor Hackford doesn't make a lot of mistakes. But he points out one in the deleted scenes area of this disc. When I saw it back in 1984, I didn't understand what the heck Jeff Bridges was doing flying around Mexico to throw James Woods off the train while Rachel Ward went to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza (an awesome but hellishly hot spot I visited in 1995). The deleted scene helps make this clear and really enhanced my enjoyment of the film.

Whether you like the movie or not, the chance to see the seaside ruins of Tulum and the astronomical temple of Chichen Itza is worth it. No one apparently had been allowed to film there before. And Jane Greer is great as the chilly mother of Ms. Ward and real estate heiress. In a role that demonstrates the calm and quiet banality of evil, Ms. Greer is also a link back to the film's inspiration - the great "Out of the Past," which she did with Robert Mitchum in 1947.

It's true the film comes apart a...

Jeff Bridges at his best
No actor has ever looked more sexy on film than Jeff Bridges does here. His chiseled physique, his tousled hair, and all his graceful movements and facial expressions kept me riveted to his presence throughout like I've never been with any other actor in any other film.

Despite some flaws, Against All Odds is a good film and visually beautiful. Jeff Bridges and James Woods put in great performances, as usual, and Rachel Ward's performance was really not bad for a model-turned-actress. Having Jeff and James to play against helped elevate her performance, I'm sure.

Jeff Bridges has always been one of my favorite actors. He was especially stellar in Fearless and The Fabulous Baker Boys, and though I've always considered him to be a handsome man, I never realized just how beautiful and sexy he was capable of being until I rented Against All Odds. It's worth seeing for that reason alone.

Battlefield Vietnam: from Dien Bien Phu to Peace with Honor. As Seen On PBS [Blu-ray]

Missing last hour in final episode "Peace With Honor"
While I am generally satisfied with this DVD set - the transfer is of good quality, with no apparent deletion of any material from the original PBS broadcast - potential buyers should be aware that the final episode on the last DVD, "Peace With Honor", contains only the first hour of what is a two-hour episode. The final chapters of the war, including the fall of Saigon, are completely missing as a result. This was disappointing to discover, and just seems to be an oversight which was not caught during this set's production.

Excellent Visual History of the Vietnam Conflict
This series is the best visual history of the Vietnam conflict that I have seen. The 9 episodes were originally issued in 1998 as part of a 12 VHS series by Time Life, although the box doesn't indicate this. The other three episodes, including the Fall of Saigon, are included in the companion set Battlefield Vietnam: Tet. Together they form a fairly comprehensive history of the Vietnam conflict from 1954 until the fall of Saigon in 1975.

Of particular interest for those who are unfamiliar with the origins of American involvement is the first episode, which deals with the end of the French colonial period with the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu, the political negociations involving the French, Vietnamese, Chinese and Americans, the 'temporary' division of Vietnam into Northern and Southern regions pending elections which were never held, and the growing American political, economic and military involvement.

The series gives especially good insight into...

A good general history of the Vietnam conflict.
I have always been favorably disposed to the "Battlefield" series of documentaries for their objective coverage of battles or campaigns as well as the production quality of the videos and this three-disc set is no exception.

This three-disc set covers the Vietnam conflict from roughly the tail end of the French involvement right through to the very end resulting in Communist victory over the south in 1975.

The video series covers not only the military aspects of the conflict but also the political aspects, showing mistakes made not only by the U.S. and their South Vietnamese allies, but also by the North and the NLF operating in the south. The video did a credible job of showing the often confused political objectives of the Johnson administration compared to a communist Vietnamese leadership who were united and unwavering in their goal of total victory.

Military aspects are covered very well, making good use of archival footage from both sides...

Tomcats

FLIPPIN' HILLARIOUS
I walked into the "Tomcats" expecting a really bad movie with a few laughs every once in a while. MAN WAS I WRONG!

"Tomcats" is about a group of buddies who one day, after a wedding, make a little bet. They each place some money into a pot every year and the Tomcat who remains single the longest, gets all the money. Some years go buy and mostly every Tomcat is married except for two, Kyle (Jake Busey) a sex crazed maniac with a ton of cash to spend and a somewhat starving artist (Jerry O'Connel). Problems arrive at a casino and O'Connel's charecter owes a group of mobsters around 50 thousand dollars. Now the only way to get his money is to marry up Kyle, the only one who stands in his way of the pot. But an even bigger problem occurs when the artist starts to fall for the girl he tries to set Kyle up with (Shannon Elizabeth).

Throughout the entire film, many hillarious situatuions and scenes occur during the film. At times, I had to grab onto my stomach because...

Raunch At Its Hilarious BEST!!
Well at least I think so. Jerry O'Connell, most recently of "Kangaroo Jack" fame, is one of two buddies in a large group of male friends who have pooled money together betting who can remain single. Finally it is down to O'Connell, an artist with some scruples, and his friend Kyle who has none.

During a trip to Las Vegas, O'Connell runs up a $51K gambling debt to a hilariously vicious, yet deadpan Bill Maher and his goons. Although there is enough in the jackpot to free O'Connell from reposession hell as Maher takes all he owns as collateral, he has even tougher odds of getting Kyle married, since he is a complete louse to all woman kind.

In walks Shannon Elizabeth as a cop who once dated Kyle and was left with a role of quarters in the road for a cab after being deflowered and dumped. She was a bridesmaid at one of the many weddings attended by the bachelor gang as they all became married one by one. O'Connell falls in love when he meets Elizabeth, but to...

Funny
This 2001 sex comedy delivers the goods. It is very funny especially with its gross out humor bits. You will laugh from beginning to end. The acting in the movie is pretty good. And the beautiful Shannon Elizabeth looks so hot as she usually does. This movie is great fun and will have you wanting more.

Ancient Aliens: Season One

Facinating and well done review of ancient astronaut theory
Could it be possible that intelligent life forms visited Earth thousands of years ago, bringing with them knowledge and technology that greatly altered the course of history and human development on Earth? The Ancient Astronauts mini-series on DVD explores this possibility in depth.

Consider the following:

** How is it that the ancient Mayan calendar is more accurate than our own if the ancients were so primitive?
** What are the pyramids really for? They're located across the globe, not just in Egypt.
** Could primitive people really move solid blocks the size of train cars with only ropes and ramps to build the pyramids? Did they really bring the quartz and granite, which is only found many miles away in most cases, to the construction site, again, by pulling train car sized chunks with ropes?
** Why are there ancient artifacts and glyphs which look identical to jet airplanes that we use today?
** Did ancient Egyptians use electricity to...

Interesting but Speculative
I'm torn: I love the intrigue of asking 'what if' questions--'what if aliens exist?' and etc.

So I enjoy the inquisitive nature of this series. I also find much of the archaeological and historical data to be quite provocative; many of these seem to require broadening our prior understandings and conceptualizations of ancient cultures to fit finds like aerodynamic carved sculptures that are essentially gliders capable of actual flight and exceedingly similar stories and depictions of 'god-like' or powerful beings from the sky, from cultures on opposite sides of the globe, and etc. This series is not short on data that is mysterious and hard to write off as coincidental.

But, just as often as the series brings up 'conventional' explanations that seem unsatisfactory for the data, the Ancient Alien Theorists make blindingly erroneous, or at least baseless, leaps of logic, connect way too many ideas with very separate historical/mythological contexts and...

Scientifically ridiculous, but utterly entertaining
Bought this dvd on a whim because it was $5 at a store. The series is now my secret indulgence. Scientifically, this series take massive inductive leaps from what is often minimal evidence. (I have only seen seasons 1 and 2, so far) Still they do it in a highly entertaining way, and for some reason, I just can't get enough of this show. It definitely makes you think. My main problem with the series is they introduce a piece of evidence, they introduce the traditionally accepted view and then they introduce the alien theory, when there may be some or many other possible solutions that fit. Still it is a show about Ancient Aliens, and they do put there ideas out there as theories or hypotheses. Overall entertaining, and I enjoy seeing the one guy with the supernatural hair.

Alice In Wonderland (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy)

Much better than it has been given credit for
In spite of having to read many negative reviews, I was still curious to see this movie. I not a huge Burton fan neither, although I've enjoyed some of his previous work. But it was something about

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Special Blu-ray/DVD Single-Disc Edition)

4.5 stars, best one of the series
I have to say I normally don't review movies. I usually try to stick with books (haha hence my name) I also tend not to see movies that were based on books, they are never right ie: Eragon, Blood and Chocolate and yes even the Harry Potters movies were missing tons of sides stories that were in the books. I saw Twilight the day it came out and was both relieved that it was so close to the book, and frustrated because like the book it lacked action. Only the last five minutes had any fighting. The same was true in New Moon, while it followed the book closely it was only the last 10 minutes where Edward fought with the Volturi that were action packed. I have to say I really liked Eclipse. I found that with all of Stepenie Meyer's books (especially Breaking Dawn) there was a huge build up towards the battle scenes, then it just fell apart. Yes it's for a younger age group, but sometimes a little more fighting and action is good. Eclipse delivered good action through out the movie,...

Loved Every Minute of a Film They Finally Got Right (And Can't Understand All the Hate)
Prior to going to the theatre, I sat down to watch the first two installments of the Twilight saga; as a habit, I try to re-watch movies whenever a sequel comes out, just to get an idea of how the series progressed and developed. And in all honesty, both contributed to my overall impression and appreciation of Eclipse.

Twilight is a movie I've never really had an opinion on one way or another; it wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it wasn't a complete train-wreck. Looking back at it now, I have to say that it is very painful to watch. I, personally, found this first installment to be very mediocre and primitive. Everything in it--the corny music, the blue filters, the choppiness, the transition, the plot selection--felt like a crappy teen flick. But the weakest point of this movie was the lead acting, so weak in fact, that it made the story more difficult to watch. The entire time, I could not focus on anything but the fact that Kristen Stewart kept letting her...

NO SPECIAL FEATURES (ONLY AUDIO COMMENTARY) ON DVD SIDE
I am writing this on behalf of my (upset) wife. I'm sure the quality of the disc/film itself is good, but I felt that I needed to put this on here for people that might be thinking about purchasing this disc. It is a single disc with a Blu-Ray on one side and DVD on the other. It is advertised as having a 6 part documentary on both sides, but this is not the case. I did a little research and apparently you have to buy the 2 disc special edition to get that. This is seems to be unfair and very confusing. We have a PS3, but my wife watches in the bedroom where there is only a DVD player. Needless to say, it's very frustrating that we now have to buy another copy of the disc. CHANGE THE ADVERTISING--it makes no mention of which disc does or does not have various features. Everything looks to be identical on both discs according to the box, and there is no mention of the DVD side not including the documentaries.

Return of Bastard Swordsman

The duel must end
If you have seen the first Bastard Swordsman then you know the story has not finished and there is still unfinished bussiness.
Return is even crazier and some new villains are added.Legendary Chen Kuan Tai is the Japanese master Samurai.Kong Do from Kung Fu Instructor and Blood Brothers,Chan Lau(Lady Assassin,Dragon's Claws),Lung Tien Hsiang(Five Element Ninjas,Long Road to Gallantry)all play the Japanese Henchmen. There is a Cameo from Phillip Ko(Shaolin Intruders,Legend of a Fighter),Lo Lieh(King Boxer,Dragon Missile).Anthony Lau Wing returns to play a different character.

more crazy kung fu and a mixture of wire fu before CG was invented.Another masterpiece from Tony Liu Jun Guk.

Good but not as good as the first
I enjoyed this sequel but it was not better than the first one. The fighting and the special effects were excellent. Very well done. Highly recommend.

Great movie!
If you like the first movie you will like this one.Chen Kuan Tai is the villain in this one. It has more of the same over the top action from the first film. The only problem i had with this movie is that Norman Sui was only in the movie 25 minutes other than that i thought it was action packed and worth keeping in my collection.

Lottery Ticket [Blu-ray]

Fickle For Finances
This Film is a blast! What makes it very funny is the way that it exaggerates all of the responses from everyone that comes in contact with Kevin, the lucky guy who defied the odds of 1 in 175 million to get all the winning numbers to win a lottery jackpot of $370 million.

Initially when he realises that he has won, he and his grandmother go into a frenzie that is simply crazy and totally hilarious. Next his best friend gets the news, its another wacky scene.

As the story goes along, in spite of trying to keep his good fortunes a secret, soon everyone in his 'hood is in his house seeking a piece of the action, and a mad on foot chase scene unfolds. You really need to see this... its a belly full of laughs. Additionally overnight Kevin's fortunes change also with a lady (Nikki) that he was admiring.

But, there is also a very serious side with this film. Kevin gets involved with a thug/bully and a mobster that suddenly get an acute interest in him and...

DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS. JUDGE FOR YOURSELF
I just want say something in regards to any negative reviews regarding this film. First of all, this film is a comedy. Nothing more. Nothing less. All political correctness should go out the door when it comes to viewing a comedy film. Secondly, this film delivers on what it's advertised to be. A comedy. Yes, this movie does ask the question of what would you do if you won the lottery. The character in this film does, indeed, make the choice that will not only benefit himself, but, also others. I, for one, loved the film and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a true comedic film. Much props to Bow Wow (whose acting does seem to get a little better with each film), Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Brandon T. Jackson (who had everyone laughing their guts out), Charlie Murphy, and everyone else involved in this film. Also, notice how I didn't go deep into the plot of the story. Many of you can read that in the description box. I, for one, am tired of reading these "reviews"...

Cute Movie
This movie wasn't "roll on the floor" funny, but it wasn't "stab me in my eyes" boring either. It was a cute predictable comedy. Glad I didn't go to the theater to see it, but enjoyed it on a boring Saturday night at home.

National Geographic: Great Migrations [Blu-ray]

Brillianly photographed but the editing is another matter
The picture, sound and photography are quite outstanding, but the editing ruins it for me. Unlike the BBC nature studies, where stories are presented in a logical time frame, NG have chosen to offer their stories chopped up into mini cocktail bites in an ad-hoc fashion. This is intensely irritating as one is just getting interested in an animal's struggle when the scene suddenly jumps somewhere completely different. There is no way to view the whole event, one must just wait for the next bit to pop up somewhere else later. Crocs attacking the unfotunate wildebeest for example probably turn up a dozen times throughout the programs and never do we get a full and continuous report on this.

The narration is not well written in my view and is not helped by a somewhat pompous presentation. The credits are another oddity: so speedy they cannot be read without frequently using the pause button. There is no point at all to offer data like this.

This a deeply disappointing...

Top notch documentary
Reviewers: if you love this series, please add your review to bump up the lousy and rather inappropriate comment of the two-star rater. This is NOT a BBC rehash, it's a National Geographic documentary that focuses on the perils and hazards of the migrations of a variety of wildlife, from tiny to huge. While a Mare river crossing might be just that, each one is different and dramatic and most definitely traumatic for the faint-at-heart. It's nature in all its glory and brutality, and it shows how humans have added to the dangers with our ever hungry encroachment on migration routes that have existed for thousands upon thousands of years.

I highly recommend this well made, excellently filmed documentary.

Excellent, compelling nature documentary from National Geographic.
I have been a fan of Nat Geo's nature documentaries since the days when Richard Kiley narrated them on PBS, and I have many nature docs on Blu Ray, but even though I have only watched the first episode of this excellent series I would rank it in the top 5 of my collection. Picture quality is excellent as is AQ. Some of this animal behavior has been seen before, but it is presented in a very compelling way with excellent narrative spoken by Alec Baldwin, who also does the "Planet Carnivore" narration for Nat Geo Wild channel. I rate my experience watching nature blu rays by the "Wow" factor, that is, how many times did I say "wow" while watching and in the first episode it was at least 5 times, which is good. I am very much looking forward to viewing the remaining episodes and the behind the scenes pieces as well. I would highly recommend this blu ray to anyone who loves nature documentaries, it is really excellent.

I could ramble on and on about what is contained inside the DVDs or Blue Ray. However, my opinion of this product is that its worth the cost. Although there is always room for improvement and matches they could have added like his title match against Brock Lesnar. I can not wait for the next Blue Ray/DVD to review John Cena's career and include his feud with The Rock.

Adamo: Little Women [Blu-ray]

Sensitive adaptation of a literary classic in a fine performance!
Louisa May Alcott wrote her novel "Little Women" in 1868, less than fifteen years after the end of the Civil War and at a time when American women were starting to question their role in society. Alcott herself grew up watching the Civil War, was a young adult and - it is said - personally questioned women's rights and roles with respect to relationships, money and position. The protagonist, Jo, is the eldest of four sisters and views her siblings' rush to marriage, their obedience to strong relatives, including mother and father, and even the poverty of the "reconstruction" period as unacceptable situations in her mind. Critics have studied Alcott's characters and the author's own life and see direct connections to the circumstances and viewpoints of Jo. As the story progresses, Jo watches one young sister, Meg, rush into marriage to a man, Brooke, who Jo sees as domineering. She watches another, Amy, go off to pursue her dream as an artist and to eventually marry a young man who -...

Very good performance of a good opera
This is a surprisingly good performance from a young cast who were mostly unknown
to me. Didonato and Tappan I have seen on video or on stage. Novacek was new to me
and I was very impressed with her performance. The singing all around was very fine with the women just slightly better than the men on average. Didonato was excellent and Tappan was very touching in her death scene. The acting was good to excellent with the women more convincing than the men. The musical score is the highlite for me. No surprise there since Adamo is well respected as a composer. Conducting and orchestral execution struck me as excellent. The sound is very good as is the picture. This was filmed for TV. There is no audience.

I have a few issues to comment on. I would have liked the balance to favor the
orchestra a little more. I attended a performance of the Minnesota Opera and the
orchestra had much more impact. The camera work had somewhat more emphasis on
closeups...

I Was Skeptical ...
... not of Mark Adamo's music, the little of which I'd heard seemed to have substance, but of his skill as a librettist and of the aptness of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" as the basis of an opera. What would the risk factor be? Maudlin sentimentality, of course! Or else, coy allusiveness to gender ambiguities.Don't jump yet! Its' the coyness, not the ambiguity, that would annoy me. I needn't have worried; Adamo's libretto is neither sentimental nor coy. It's a serious dramatic exploration of the transfer of attention/affection from sibling or parent to "life mate", in short, of the process of individuation. The four sisters are "perfect" together; they sing of such perfection in duet and quartet, about how rare it is that sisters should also be best friends. Honestly, their sympathy for each other is quite touching; most of 'us' will be reluctant to see that closeness threatened. But "Things change" -- that's the repeated motif, in words and music -- as one sister is wooed and...

3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur
My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

In addition to the title scenes 5 more out of screen effects extend an impressive 50% of the way, from the screen to the viewer. Another 20 reached 25% or more and many are in the 5 to 10% range.

EXCESS PARALLAX in a few of the scenes make it hard to mentally assemble the 3D.

Far better than Wild Ocean in every respect

*** Visually stunning sea floor & creature footage in crystal clear 3D ***

MY 3D RATING = VERY GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different. What I see at 25% you may see at 15% or 35%. To fully realize how far something is out of the screen for you, pause on an effect and direct a partner with an extended finger to the tip of what you are seeing. You may be surprised.

AMAZING 3D MOVIE..... But not for the price!
As I write this review the price on this sucker is $37.99! Maybe that wouldn't be so bad if it was a full length movie with a DVD and digital copy however you are just getting a 3d disc and a blu-ray disc with 40 minutes of film (You are basically paying $1 for each minute!)

Aside from the price the movie is GREAT! I was lucky enough to get this movie free with my sony 3d tv and it is definitely great to show off to friends! As I said... its about 40 minutes long and includes some of the most beautiful under sea shots you'll ever see. As far as the 3D effects go, it won't disappoint you! The 3D gives you the depth effect as it should in an ocean setting. It really looks as though you can walk straight through your tv and swim with the sharks (don't try that at home). Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet do a great job narrating while Danny Elfman gives us some fun music to listen to!

Overall i give it 4 stars with the price not being an involvement. It missed the 5...

This is a very good and funny movie with a heart-warming storyline and a great message. Abby Jensen has been making a secret wish-list for her Sweet 16th Birthday ever since she was a little girl. IMAX: Under the Sea 3D (Single-Disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray Combo)

Possibly the best application of 3D among Blu-Ray 3D discs so far
This disc represents the best example of 3D photography available for Blu-Ray 3D at this time (17-Nov-2010). And, where one might fear that it would be undermined by insipid commentary from Jim Carrey, that fear turns out to be misplaced, with only a few brief exceptions.

Having done 3D (it should really be called "stereo") photography in the past, I can say that there are ways to do it well, and ways to do it poorly. Poor technique, and/or difficult subject matter, lead to artifacts (like distracting cases of the left image bleeding through into the right image, and vice versa - imperfect presentation technology is a factor in such cases, but stereo photographers know they face such problems, and failure to allow for them shows a lack of care) and, in extreme cases, even to difficulty in mentally assembling the 3D scene.

The stereo photography on this disc is not perfect in every case, but, overall, it is the best I've seen yet from any Blu-Ray 3D title (and...

most accurate color I've seen
I am a scuba diver and I have dove all over the world including the South Pacific.

Many friends ask me what it looks like when we scuba dive. White balance is extremely difficult when shooting pictures under water, and changes constantly. You need to take a white card and rebalance the camera every few minutes. This movie, shot in the South Pacific, New Guinea, New Zealand, The Great Barrier Reef etc, is the most accurate ocean movie I've ever seen. They have somehow accurately captured the rainbow of colors we see when we dive. You will never see anything as bright and colorful as tropical fish and coral. The film crew must have a huge array of lights to shoot this.

Fish "school", move together, so nearsighted larger predator fish, sharks and such, will think they are one big fish instead of a thousand small fish and not attack them. This movie shows thousands of small fish schooling together, which is a fascinating and hypnotic process to watch...

Beautiful scenery with funny commentary.
I rented this movie at Blockbuster to watch on a Samsung UN55C8000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV.
IMAX offers many different movies that cover a wide range of topics that are great for children and adults.
Needless to say, the quality of the movie is simply breathtaking.
The movie shows various animals and species in their natural underwater habitat that most of us simply will never get to see in our lifetimes.

Jim Carrey's narration is an added bonus to the overall entertainment value. He narrates with a relaxed yet charming voice with small jokes you and your family will be sure to enjoy.
With stunning images and vivid colors and scenery, this movie must not be missed.

The only drawback to this movie is the length at under an hour which will leave you either wanting more or simply watching it again.
I am placing an order on Amazon for my own copy after I finish...

Monk: Season One

Excellent comedy, short season
A funny show where a quirky detective is alternately helped and hindered by his obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and several phobias. The premiere was two hours long and episodes were 60 minutes long. I'm impressed that this is widescreen and DTS! Four discs and running time of 563 minutes doesn't leave much room for the extras, but I haven't been able to find much detail about the extras or their length.

Premiere: 1 & 2. Mr. Monk and the Candidate: Monk works as a private investigator after losing his job on the police department due to his psychiatric problems. Three years later, he gets a call from his old boss who needs his help to solve a murder.

3. Mr. Monk and the Psychic: Monk and a psychic stage a psychic reading to catch a murderer.

4. Mr. Monk Meets Dale the Whale gs: Adam Arkin: Monk tries to prove how a bedridden 800 pound man could have murdered a judge.

5. Mr. Monk Goes to the Carnival: Monk tries to discover who murdered a man riding on a...

Off to a Strong Start
I blew it. I didn't start watching this show until it's second season. Little did I know what I was missing.

Tony Shalhoub stars as Adrian Monk, a former police detective no longer on the force because of his obsessive-compulsive disorder and his phobias. He does still consult on some of their most bizarre cases, however. For example, how could an 800-lb. man commit murder? Why was a billionaire killed while mugging a man on a date? Did a fellow airline passenger really kill his wife? How could a man commit murder and run a marathon at the same time?

This series falls into the classic puzzle mystery genre, my personal favorite. Sometimes I have an idea why or how, but it takes the ending for me to know for sure. More often then not, I'm stumped. Along the way, we get plenty of laughs at the various situations we find Mr. Monk in. The obsessive-compulsive disorder and his fears are handled just right. They provide the clues needed and humor without being over the top or...

The set was a great idea, but had problems with the Extras
I couldn't wait to get this set. The first thing I did was to watch the extra material. Hmmm. No sound. Well, there was the background music, but couldn't hear the voice track. There was one part of one clip where Bitty's voice came through, but otherwise nada. Amazon sent me a replacement, but it had the same problem. I went through all the episodes, and they worked. But just couldn't get a voice track out of the extra material.

Is it just me that had this problem? For me it ruined an otherwise outstanding buy.

Clash of the Titans [Blu-ray 3D]

Great Special Effects, Short On Story
Never mind that Clash of the Titans play fast and loose with the mythological story of Perseus. Never mind that Medusa wasn't a Titan. Never mind that the Kraken is from Scandinavian mythology, and that casting Lawrence Olivier as Zeus in the 1981 version was sort of typecasting.

The new Clash of the Titans is a darker, grittier more realistic Bronze age world than the 1981 version, but the story hasn`t changed all that much. The citizens of Argos have become disenchanted with the rule of the Gods. The Gods have caused too much chaos and ruin to their lives so they've decided to take their destinies into their own hands, and destroy the temples and statues of the Gods. In doing so, Perseus'(Sam Worthington) family is killed by a falling statue of Zeus. When Zeus (Liam Neeson) learns of the desecration urged on by Hades (Ralph Fiennes), he decides to destroy the city in four days or they can offer the sacrifice of the King of Argos' daughter Andromeda (Alexa Davalos). In a...

Excellent movie needs EXCELLENT 3D
I bought this movie when we bought our 3D tv last year. Honestly, it wouldn't have been my first choice of 3D movies, but when we bought it, there were only a handful of movies available in 3D, which were mostly documentaries, and of course we had to buy a few movies to properly try out our new toy. So mostly due to lack of other options, we purchased this one.

I am very pleased to say that what I expected to be a movie filled with too much action (I expected mostly fighting and effects with no real plot) was actually fantastic! It's now one of my favorites, especially as I now have it synced onto my iPod and iPad (thank you digital copy!), so I can watch it any time or place I'd like.

The 3D is incredible! The picture and sound are very realistic (on every version of the movie, even DVD). I was very impressed.
However, if you are expecting an "old time" movie theatre 3D, you will not find that here. The 3D in this movie is not where the images jump off...

"Release the Kraken!"
I'm usually fairly easy going when it comes to popcorn flicks that serve no real purpose except to exist as breezy, silly fun. I love The Mummy and The Mask of Zorro, Pirates of the Caribbean and Sherlock Holmes, particularly since you can tell the writers, cast and crew have embraced the idea of making a film that has sheer entertainment as its fundamental goal. These types of movies have been around for a long time, not excepting the original Clash of the Titans film. Sometimes you're just in the mood to sit back, turn off your brain, and enjoy the action that unfolds in front of you.

But then there are movies that...

Wycliffe - Series 4

Best Wycliffe yet
This excellent crime series really hit its stride with series 4. The stories are well-plotted, the characters are sharply defined and the acting is wonderful. For the first time a storyline is carried over from episode to episode, which heightens the emotional impact. The episode in which it is finally resolved ('Seen A Ghost') is the best episode of the entire Wycliffe canon.

If you haven't caught up with this series but you like British mystery, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Missing Episode
Although a fine series otherwise, due to episode 9 "Dance Of The Scorpions" being omitted it lacks continuity going into series 5.

the most powerful series of this one.
This is the show that started with a decent first series. (which truthfully is far weaker than this 4 series) And it continued to get better; so by the third series it was really humming and all the parts fell into place. This series really moved forward in storylines and utilizing the two other leads of the show. In this one we have one of them make terrible decisions and it leads to the death of child even. And in another Wycliffe must maintain his stoic leadership deal with the slimey superintendent who wants to sacrifice his detective out of hand so that the sup can gain points and look better. All those people who dismissed the first series and never gave this one a chance sure lost out. It's also fun to see the late 90's again the tech has changed alot since then and I am not sure we are better off in some ways for it. (too many people today don't communicate , all they do is sit and look at little screens). Still in other ways it's better. Sadly they unwisely only made five...

where's the christmas special?
This series is missing the crucial christmas special in which wycliff gets shot. So we start out with him recovering and dealing with post traumatic shock syndrome. THe stories are goog though as usual and the acting is first rate. Then in the last 3 episodes one of the key characters goes on a training mission. IN reality he got meningitis and wasn't able to continue the show. The insurance companies wouldn't cover him to return. THis angered the cast who then didn't return for a sixth series. The show was a hit series too, so once again insurance companies ruin someones life, in this case fans of the show as well. This one is not the strongest of the series at all though. Series 4 and 3 were great detective shows. This one because the christmas special is missing and the last few without a key character is not up to them, but it's still pretty darn good. IN other words it's not excellent but it's way above average still. The dvd looks great and you do see some film grain but...

Stanlena
I hope there are more of this Wycliff. He is directing the series now and he seems a little grouchy now. Still good acting though I hope he does what is best for him and the series. Don't end the series ever. Keep up the good work Wycliffe. What is next???

Glee: Season 1 Giftset

The low reviews on here have nothing to do with the show...be aware
First, all of these low reviews are based on the fact that people bought Season 1, Volume 1 DVD's of the show - and are now mad that they are releasing a full season on DVD. Here are a couple of points that you should acknowledge before putting up a low rating:

1. They started selling Volume 1 before the entire season was complete. If you think about that for a minute - how were they going to sell a "whole" season DVD if the shows had not even aired yet? How can you be surprised that you would then be faced with a choice at the end of the season between buying the full season in one set or having to buy Volume 2? Other shows have done the same thing, like Battlestar Galatica. Sure, they do it to make money - to hit the market while the shows are hot - but the fault is really the consumer. If we all stopped buying these 1/2 season DVD's, they would stop selling them. You KNOW they are gonna release a full season DVD at the end of the season. Heck, even if a show is...

This show's a true gem!
In addition to exploring highly pertinent issues that most teen shows have failed to do so sensitively, Glee has created a completely new genre of television. The musical numbers are inspiring, the dialogue is wittier than in most sitcoms, and the touching moments are captured beautifully. Glee is a truly original creation and deserves all the accolades it has been receiving. Television hasn't seen a group of gifted young actors of this calibre in years, and it is exciting to watch them become rising stars.
This is a perfect collection for ANY lover of musicals!

Agree with the other poster, not really worth the extra money
Mine arrived today, and while the journal is nice, the only pictures of the cast are those on the cover (i.e. the little square box photos). The 7 disk DVD set is the same as the standalone set. If you can get the Gift set at a really good price, I'd say go ahead and buy it. However I don't know that it is worth the extra $13 that I paid for it. Could have been worse - I may have purchased it at full price!

~ Edit 6 Jan 2011 ~ a little more detailed information about the product:

Only difference that I can find between this product and the full Season 1 standalone set, is that the giftset comes with a journal. The 7 disk box set is the same as the non giftset version. When I compare the extras listed on the Disk contents list inside the box, they are the same extras as those on the non giftset version. The back of the Disk box reports that the contents are 974 minutes long - unlike what is reported on the Amazon listing for the giftset.

The journal is...

The IT Crowd: Complete Fourth Season

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
I don't know about anyone else, but I shrieked with mad, geeky laughter when I found out that there would be a fourth season of "The I.T. Crowd."

And once the Britcom geekfest gets going again, it's almost like it was never gone (the familiar cluttered office, the rampant technonerdery, the idiotic plans of the crazy boss). The first episode is a little bland at times, but the five that follow are absolute, sheer brilliance -- plenty of surreal situations, great acting, and general weirdness.

Hoping to get new job opportunities, Jen applies to be the new Entertainment Manager... only to discover that it means being Douglas' "Fredo" (ie getting hooker and strippers for his business buddies). Her best bet is to unload the visiting guys on Moss and Roy, but can a RPG game possibly save the day? This episode was a little on the limp side, especially since so much of it focused on Roy deteriorating after a bad breakup.

But things go back to normal in "Final...

fun!
Another brilliant season of the hilarious comedy The IT Crowd!

The tone and pacing of the comedy is spot on, and the characters are interesting, even when they aren't in the spotlight. This series is
truly lightning in a bottle.

If you have not yet seen this show, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Don't feel overwhelmed by the fact that there are 4 seasons, each season is short, and you
could knock out the ENTIRE series in a weekend! MASSIVE FUN!

An absolute treat, 5 huge stars, and my absolute highest recommendation.

Brilliant!

Still the best comedy made for TV
The fourth season is as good as ever. At least I have my DVD's to watch since there is never anything good on cable!

Gunsmoke: The Fourth Season, Vol. 2

Keep Gunsmoke releases coming!
Now that's the way Gunsmoke releases should be, one every 2 months! Split sesaons or not, I am happy to see 4 of 20 seasons soon to be in my collection. I just hope & pray that CBS Paramount will get on Gunsmoke Season 5 early in 2011 so I can live long enough to have all 20 seasons in my collection.
Thanks from a BIG Gunsmoke fan.

Also pleased with the releasing rate as a new young fan
Yes, I have to agree with the before-poster -

it is a much better rate to release each half-a-season every two months!

We won't get them to release full seasons like the first, so let's stay happy,
IF they carry on with this releasing rate!
16 more seasons to go...with this rate it would take 64 months for all twenty seasons...
only five/six years...this would be acceptable, especially for the long-time fans.

I've been knowing Gunsmoke only for about 4 months now, been a western-fan (Bonanza, John Wayne etc)
all my 30-year-young life - but I never experienced such a great atmosphered show like Gunsmoke.

Never watched one of the later episodes for I wanna start with the early ones...
...so I am excited what is about to come when sometime Chester will leave and Festus is about
to join the crew (whom I don't know yet...)

Here in good old Germany the Gunsmoke DVDs can only be purchased from the US, so it...

gunsmoke season 1
We love Gunsmoke! My husband has been a fan all his adult life. I remember watching it with my Dad. Todays choices of tv viewing are sooo bad that Gunsmoke is actually refreshing to watch. Please keep 'em coming!

Altiplano

Highly Original and Beautiful
This is by far one of the most original films I have seen in recent times. Masterfully executed and extraordinarily photographed, Altiplano tells a tragic story where very different worlds collide and then reconcile. Haunting imagery where religious and pagan overtones coexist in perfect harmony. Peruvian Indians from the Altiplano of Turubamba are getting sick (and dying) as a result of Mercury poisoning (left by foreigners exploiting the mines). The indians believe the Mercury is liquid silver and they use it for religious purposes. Magaly Solier, the protagonist is an amazing and powerful actor.

The movie has many subplots going on and I believe the directors did an excellent work interweaving them.

If you are the type of person who takes the time to enjoy an art film and inundate your senses with beautiful images, this film definitely deserves a spot in your collection.

Too much "artistic" contrivance...
It is a great story and very much a tragic reality for the exploited people of the Andes, unfortunately the flow and authenticity of the film was ruined by the overdone and superficial interludes of surrealism that took the earthiness of the story from the heart back up into the head. It is still worth watching if you skip these overly art directed bits.

Despicable Me (Single-Disc Edition)

Fun Movie With a Positive Message
I went to this movie reluctantly, mostly because my ten year old talked me into it. I had only seen the trailers and I was expecting an extended version of Spy vs Spy, which I have never really loved. This movie suprised and delighted me. Far from being a sad 3D version of silly one-upmanship, this movie had a lot of heart, and a lovely message.

I especially enjoyed how the main character struggled with the growth he experiences throughout the movie. We get to see him struggling with the difficulty of giving up his old behavior patterns and goals, even though he clearly sees that he could be happier if he let them go. And the difficulty that Groo's only friend has with the changes he experiences as he lets three little girls into his life, and how his friend tries to prevent him from changing, are a great reminder that sometimes when we make positive changes in our lives the people around us aren't always as supportive as they should be.

My son loved the movie...

Surprisingly Good!!! Worth watching once.
Okay, first let me be clear. I in no way wanted to go and see this movie. Why did I go? Well that is what you have to do when you have a 10 year old brother and the parents don't want to take him to see it. Anyway, twenty minutes into the movie I started to think that the movie was okay for younger children, because it was quite a silly plot line (the main aim in the plot is that they want to shirink the moon) and was maybe lacking in some emotion. However, I have to admit by the end of the movie I quite enjoyed it, you really get to see Gru (our villian turned dad),on his journey and see the changing emotions he has to go through, not to mention the decisions he has to make. Some of the scenes our quite touching and some of the dialogue is quite humerous.
Now I just want to mention the cast, there is a very good cast including the very funny Steve Carell, Jason Segal, Julie Andrews, Russell Brand leading the cast but of course I have to give credit to the actresses who played...

He's a Villain, But He's Not a Bad Guy
While not quite as wondrous or challenging as a Disney/Pixar film, "Despicable Me" is still a lot of fun, able to make audiences laugh without having to sacrifice story or character development. It's also one of the few animated films to not entertain the idea of heroes - it merely distinguishes between evil villains and not-so-evil villains, the latter apparently capable of good deeds despite their propensity for hatching diabolical schemes. Such a person is Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who looks like a pointy-nosed Fester Addams and speaks in a pseudo-Russian accent so delightfully phony, it only adds to his charm. His goal has always been to become the world's greatest super villain, but as the film progresses, we realize that, underneath it all, he's actually a pretty nice guy.

He certainly has the means to be a criminal mastermind; within his vast secret lair beneath his looming black house, he and the goggled Dr. Nefario (voiced by Russell Brand) have overseen the...

The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition)

Absolutely gut busting hilarious!
This is one of the funniest movies to come out in a very long time. Here's why:

1. The movie was filled with belly laughing funny bits that were surprising and not the typical cliche kind of stuff. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.

2. There was also a lot of subtle humor, also making this movie very entertaining.

3. Will Ferrell was absolutely hilarious. That's to be expected. What was so surprising was Mark Wahlberg. He was different from his normal hard as nails tough guy roles, and he played off of Ferrell just perfectly. He was so hilarious.

4. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were perfect in their roles. They weren't on for long, but they were part of some very funny bits. Michael Keaton also contributed some fun to the movie. Eva Mendes was perfectly cast. All in all, a superb cast that made for an uproariously funny comedy.

While there were periods that moved a bit slowly, that shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this...

TLC has never been this funny!
I have not laughed this hard since "The Hangover". This has to be the best comedy I have seen this summer, hands down. I only wish I could think of a TLC lyric to bring it all home. Does anyone remember "Waterfalls"? From the wooden gun to the non-stop one liners, I was rolling in the floor. Will Ferrell has not been this good since "Old School" and Mark Wahlberg was ever bit his comedic equal in this fantastic film. From Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson all the way to Michael Keaton, everyone was amazing. Whoever did the casting for this movie took a second seat to only one person, the writers. The script was drop dead hilarious.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg play two down and out cops? Mr. Ferrell seems to be stuck in his rut by his own choice and since I don't want to give anything away, let's just say that Mark Wahlberg made a colossal mistake to have found his way down to the lower levels of hell. Luckily the two of them are partners. Samuel L. Jackson...

Very Funny.
Watched this recently and now looking to buy it. I read the reviews that gave this movie negative feedback but honestly, I couldn't read them as most of them had incoherent, unfinished sentences. Some apparently don't believe in using proper spelling, grammar or logic. I then came to the conclusion that they all had something in common: They fall into the "I'm easily amused and require dumbed down fast pace comedy to make me happy...ooh a squirrel...is that Miley Cyrus doing a duet with Justin Bieber on the radio?" category. I know, I know I guess maybe using an acronym would be better but then who would get it?

Anyways, it's at least a rental for those curious and sorry for my rant. I just thought the movie was funny. C'mon guys! "I'm a peacock, ya' gotta let me fly!!!"

Hawaii Five-O: Tenth Season

Rip Off
The tenth season of HFO has absolutely NOT been remastered. I bought this for Christmas thinking that it would be the same quality as all the other seasons. Boy was I wrong. I've seen VHS tapes taken from old television reruns that look and sound better than these dvd's. This whole season reeks of being thrown together overnight, and they want $37.00 for this garbage! I feel like I've been totally scammed here. This effort would be worth 5 or 6 dollars at best. Save your money, don't get ripped off.

Edit: They have since raised the price to $39.00. Nice.

Shame on you CBS/Paramount !!!!!!!!!!
I have purchased and own all of the previous nine seasons of Hawaii Five-O.This is perhaps the best television series ever made.My ultimate goal was to eventually own the entire series on dvd...all 12 seasons.I own many other CBS/Paramount dvd set releases of television series and movies. The quality has always been top notch.I have often told friends how the remastering of older tv shows by CBS/Paramount has been beyond belief !!!.Bright, sharp, crisp, vivid, clear and colorful images that simply pop off the screen. It all ends with the tenth season release of Hawaii Five-O by CBS/Paramount.A transfer that one would expect from a two bit unknown studio. Either Hawaii Five O went from recording on film (to) video tape for season 10,which would explain the sub standard video quality,or it is a poor transfer from CBS/Paramount.Season 10 was released unusually soon after season 9,no doubt to increase sales due to the popular new Hawaii Five O,and benefit from Christmas sales. But if they took a...

Season 10 - Feel Like I Was Ripped Off
As an avid Five-0 fan, I eagerly await each new release. The video quality of season 10 is so poor that you would expect to find it in the $5 bargain bin at Wal-Mart. This is a slap in the face to all of the faithful that have purchased the first 9 seasons. At first I thought I was having a problem with my equipment. After testing the collection on two different systems as well as a PC I realized that CBS & Paramount had ripped me off. It's too bad this wasn't produced by a reputable company like Disney. When they release old films they have truly remastered them.
